"When Tragedy Is Not Ours, Can We Still Care?"

            Or have we become too desensitized to the suffering of others? 

Have the constant dreadful images of poverty, hunger, death, violence and hate in the entertainment and the media made us too cynical by need of protecting ourselves? Have we become too thick-skinned to really feel anything about it? Too selfish and involved in our own problems to care about anyone else's?

In a world of disconnected connection, I would love to advocate for a certain return to empathy. Let's learn to see straight into reality and not take our eyes away from what we don't want to see... let's try to put ourselves in the shoes of others who may be in a worst position than ours and try to help whenever we can. 

If we see someone down, let's pick them up and help them walk and get by again. If we see someone being bullied, let's help defend the victim so they don't have to face the aggressor alone. There is comfort and strength in numbers.  If we see someone really struggling, let's stop for a minute and be thankful it's not us going through that, and let's help with any gesture, however small, that we can...

If we can learn to not just look the other way, not just switch the channel or flip the page, or change the subject, maybe we'll be able to -one step at a time- make the darkness a bit brighter....
