Tolstoyans at Tuckton, Bournemouth 1932

The Estonian Ludwig, or rather Ludvig, Perno was the british arm of Tolstoy's publishing business, with Vladimir Chertkov (Tchertkoff) at the Moscow end. This envelope is actually from Chertkov himself, who first arrived in England in 1894. He settled initially just outside Croydon on Duppas Hill with other renegade emigres before moving close to an early Tolstoyan land colony at Cock Clarks in Essex. Tolstoy's books were printed by Chertkov's Free Age Press at Hill Farm in Purleigh for a couple of years around 1900. Tolstoy's biographer, Aylmer Maude lived just across the fields on the edge of Bicknacre, having returned from managing a carpet business in Moscow. (he later moved to Great Baddow,where he died)
In about 1901, after the Tolstoyan commune had broken and the remnants removed themselves to Whiteway near Stroud, the printing presses were taken to Tuckton House near to the water works in Christchurch,where they were overseen by Chertkov before he returned to Russia in about 1908, before the death of Tolstoy himself in 1910.
A note on the flap says "letter of 16 I p 54 received. Also letter from Lloyds Bank. VT "

I want to connect with David Walsh, because we may be relatives. Ludvig Perno may be my grandmothers Ekaterina Lindeman´s (born Perno in Valga, Estonia, 1898-1984) brother. My mother Victoria (1920-1984) sayd, that one of my grandmothers brothers lives in England and has daughter Maikki.

In the 1911 census Leonid Perno , b 1888, is living at Tuckton born "Baths, Provinces of Russia".
