This view just captured me and I sat just admiring all that was in front of me.

New Zealand - South Island

The next series of photos I will be posting are from my work / personal trip to the south island over two weeks in February 2018.

As I had limited photo time, I planned the locations and general shots I wanted and put together really detailed notes. The "only" variable was the weather.

So I waited until few days before arrival to look at weather and then finalize my route. I was shocked to find ALL hotels/motels fully booked or having rooms at $400/$500 per night! Yikes! I had forgotten to factor in the Chinese New Year, holiday travelers (which were many, many, many) and the fact that New Zealand doesn’t have big hotel chains.

So I resorted to Plan B (panic mode) and booked a week at the Hilton Double Tree in Queenstown using Hilton points. Not the ideal spot for the photography I had planned, but I could make it work. For example, I landed in Christchurch late on Saturday grabbed a hotel for 5 hours and drove at 2:30 AM to Lake Tekapo. And then into Queenstown.

The south island is 990 miles (1,593 KM) long and 250 miles (402 KM) wide. I racked up 1,618 miles (2,604 KM) in my rental car. New Zealand roads are not like other places - they are small and twisty without any Freeways / Autobahn.

If anyone is planning a trip to the South Island, do drop me a note and I will be happy to answer any questions. All of my photos have GPS, so you know exactly where I was. Don’t trust the EXIF for the timestamp – as I travel so much I rarely remember to update my cameras time zone. But the minute part should be correct :-)
