S.O.D (Screen of Death) - a photo on Flickriver

My trusty camera died. RIP.
That's ok by me, because I'd already decided to get the new Canon 450D that arrives in April.

Only problem is - we go away at the beginning of March on Holiday. Disaster.

As of yesterday morning I had no autofocus, the lens would travel all the way to one extreme or the other and then stop. I thought it was something to do with the fact I'd been using the Lensbaby (manual focus only) and that had caused an upset.. So I did a google search..

Seems to be a known problem with the 300D in any case and is a problem with the secondary mirror underneath the main mirror that allows the auto focus system to work.

There is a repair mentioned here but it is for a different part of the same mechanism that breaks..

Apparently if a pin or spring inside goes the mirror assembly, the second mirror fails to flip up and blocks the sensor, which means two thirds of the pic is visible.

So, sh*t I believe is the correct phrase. My camera is now a brick and we go away in 3 weeks on Holiday.

Oh, please don't rub salt into the wound by leaving nice sympathetic remarks... it would be my luck that everyone sees this and next thing I know, this would be in explore - my first of 2008! I couldn't handle that!!!!
