La Marseillaise La Marseillaise
La Marseillaise

This relief on one part of the Arc is the work of Francois Rude. Also entitled "The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792". This is the most known, larger-than-life and famous of the reliefs of the arc. Its total height is a few meters long. This illustrates French people from all walks of life, rising in battle against the enemy. Francois Rude's father was one of them. The artwork aroused French patriotism -- the work became "La Marseillaise" -- the French national anthem written in 1792 -- the same year as the departure of the volunteers. Arc de Triomphe Avenue des Champs-Élysées Paris, France
