Michael Irish O'Farrell - a photo on Flickriver

            AP, June 12, 1989:  Oakland, CA -- Hell's Angels Leader Michael "Irish" O'Farrell received the club's funeral honors as hundreds of bikers wearing jackets emblazoned with the winged skull escorted his body to a cemetery.

O'Farrell, believed by law enforcement to be second in the club's hierarchy only to its spiritual leader, Ralph "Sonny" Barger Jr., died during a bloody bar brawl on Tuesday.

"You couldn't ask for a more dedicated or more faithful guy to his friends and to the Hells Angels," a club member known only as Cisco said at the funeral service.

"I ain't going to say goodbye.  Goodbyes are for the movies.  So long, buddy," he said in a choked voice.

Both O'Farrell, who celebrated his 40th birthday four days before his death, and Barger faced sentencing on federal explosives convictions.  O'Farrell was stabbed once each in the neck and chest and five times in the back as well as being shot four times from behind, the Alameda County coroner's office said.

About 1,000 people filed into a funeral home in East Oakland to pay final respects Saturday to O'Farrell, who acted as president of the club's Oakland chapter in the early 1980s while Barger recovered from a throat operation for cancer.

After visiting the closed casket, decorated with flowers and pictures of him on his motorcycle, mourners walked into an adjoining room to offer condolences to Barger.  Wreaths from motorcycle clubs throughout the West adorned the chapel.

Mourners, including O'Farrell's wife, Teddy, his son, and about 250 bikers, accompanied his body to Evergreen Cemetery.  There, bikers buried O'Farrell after placing ribbons and banners from the flowers on the casket.

Investigators don't have a motive for O'Farrell's killing and don't believe he was killed by a rival gang.

But Alameda County Sheriff's Lt. Dean Hess said last week drugs were involved.  Powdered methamphetamine, better known as speed, was found on the San Leandro bar's patio, where the killing occurred.

Barger and O'Farrell, both of Oakland, were convicted in October for what prosecutors said was a revenge attack for the slaying of a Hells Angel who was shot outside a bar in Jefferson County, KY, in August 1986.  A Louisville Outlaw motorcycle club member had pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in Webb's death.
