steep walk up Shaws Brow - a photo on Flickriver

            aka William Brown Street, Liverpool, England.

From around the mid 1700s it became possible to make a passenger coach journey direct from Dale Street (seen here at the bottom of the hill) to London in about four days.  Due to improving road surfaces, etc. journey length was cut to two days over the next few decades.  

The horse drawn coaches emerged from the arches of Dale Street inns such as "the Saracens Head" and "the Golden Lion".  From there, just like the pedestrians in my picture, they climbed Shaws Brow heading for the London Road (still so-named) and then onwards towards Warrington on the first leg of the long trek.

Shaws Brow was subsequently renamed William Brown Street and is no longer a through route.  Everything else has changed too, except for the steepness of the land.  It's the one surviving physical detail which connects past and present.
