Koh Lipe is the southernmost island of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. It is part of the Adang-Rawi archipelago. This archipelago forms, together with the Tarutao archipelago, the National Park Koh Tarutao. The Chao Lay live on the islands. This is a tribe that lives mainly on the islands in the Andaman Sea. Chao Lay - people of the sea are Stateless and therefore can not own land. But is seems the Thai government recognize and respect the rights of Chao Lay to live here on Koh Adang as they always have. Although Koh Lipe is part of a national park, the inhabitants are only allowed to develop part of the island for tourism. All other islands is prohibit. On the car-free island there are a few narrow roads that connect the beaches, because that is what it is all about: enjoying the sun, sea and beach. The seawater is emerald green-blue and crystal clear. The island is surrounded by a beautiful coral reef with numerous beautiful tropical fish. Our boatman takes us to the most beautiful and best snorkling spots in the area. The under-water reefs of the Tarutao National Park offer a great variety of hard corals, but it’s the soft coral gardens which make diving in Koh Lipe really special. We have seen many big fish, cuttlefish, the clown fish alias NEMO and two moray eels. That it is a National Park means that the entire island is protected area. This is not for nothing, because nature here is really beautiful. Twenty years ago I had been here with my wife, together with our daughter back again. See photo from 1998.

Outside the mainstream of Thai society, the Sea Gypsies are content to continue their traditional ways. The "Sea Gypsies" of southern Thailand known in Thai as Chao Lay or "People of the Sea". They live either in huts by the shore or in floating houses. The Chao Lay still use small-scale fishing, traditional fishing methods such as traps and hook and line fishing. Koh Lipe is het meest zuidelijke eiland van Thailand gelegen in de Andamanse Zee. Het maakt deel uit van de Adang-Rawi-archipel. Deze archipel vormt samen met de Tarutao-archipel het Nationaal Park Koh Tarutao. Op het eiland wonen de Chao Lay. Dit is een stam die voornamelijk op de eilanden in de Andamanse Zee leeft. Chao Lay, mensen van de zee, zijn Staatloos en kunnen daarom geen land bezitten. Maar het lijkt erop dat de Thaise overheid de rechten van Chao Lay erkent en respecteert om hier op Koh Adang te wonen zoals ze altijd gedaan hebben. Ze leven in hutten aan de kust of in drijvende huizen. De Chao Lay maakt nog steeds gebruik van kleinschalige visvangst, traditionele vismethoden zoals vallen hierboven en haak- en lijnvissen. Ze werken in een kleine gemeenschap op het eiland Adang. Ondanks dat Koh Lipe deel uitmaakt van een nationaal park mogen de inwoners slechts een gedeelte van het eiland verder ontwikkelen voor toerisme. Alle andere eilanden zijn onbewoond. Op het autovrije eiland lopen enkele smalle wegen die de stranden met elkaar verbinden, want dat is waar het op hier vooral om draait: genieten van zon, zee en strand. Het zeewater is smaragdgroen-blauw en glashelder. Het eiland wordt omringd door een prachtig koraalrif met talloze prachtige tropische vissen. Met onze bootman varen we naar de mooiste en beste snorkelplekken rond Koh Adang en omgeving Koh Lipe. De onderwaterwaterriffen van het Tarutao National Park bieden een grote verscheidenheid aan harde koralen, maar het zijn de zachte koraaltuinen die duiken in Koh Lipe echt speciaal maken. We hebben veel grote vissen gezien, inktvissen, de clownvis alias NEMO en twee murenen. Dat het een Nationaal Park is, betekent dat het gehele eiland beschermd gebied is. Dit is niet voor niets, want de natuur hier is werkelijk is prachtig. Twintig jaar geleden was ik hier met m'n vrouw geweest nu samen met onze dochter weer terug. Zie foto uit 1998.
