Kockengense Mill between the buttercups

The Kockengense Mill is located south of the village of Kockengen, in the Dutch province of Utrecht. The mill was built in 1675. After 1962, the mill served as a reserve water mill for a larger area with a few polders being combined. Since 1963, mill has been owned by the Utrecht Utrechtse Molens Foundation. The mill is now functioning as a reserve mill. The landscape in this area originated after the year 1000, when colonists retracted and extracted the peat wildlife. The name Kockengen is derived from Cockagne meaning land of plenty. For the miller and his family it wasn't a land of plenty. The profession was heavy and badly paid. Originally, everyone lived in the tower of the mill. Not until the end of the nineteenth century a house was built next to the mill. There are the many old knotted willows that surround our path. It is also a real bird area, I regularly saw swarms of geese flying over.

Kockengen is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. The name of the town is a reference to Cockaigne, a medieval fictional land of plenty. De Kockengense Molen is een wipmolen iets ten zuiden van het dorp Kockengen, in de Nederlandse provincie Utrecht. De molen is in 1675 gebouwd en heeft tot 1960 de polder Kockengen op windkracht bemalen. Na 1962 is de molen als reservegemaal gaan dienen voor een groter gebied waarbij enkele polders zijn gecombineerd. Sinds 1963 is molen eigendom van de Stichting De Utrechtse Molens. De molen functioneert tegenwoordig als reservegemaal. Het landschap in deze omgeving is ontstaan na het jaar 1000, toen kolonisten de veenwildernis introkken en ontgonnen. De naam Kockengen is afgeleid van Cockagne dat Luilekkerland betekent. Voor de molenaar en zijn gezin was het allesbehalve een Luilekkerland. Het beroep was zwaar en verdiende slecht. Oorspronkelijk woonde men met zijn allen in ondertoren van de molen. Pas aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw werd er naast de molen een huisje gebouwd. Bijzonder zijn de vele oude knotwilgen die ons pad omzoomen, als wachters in het landschap. Het is ook een echt vogelgebied, ik zag regelmatig zwermen ganzen overvliegen. Het strokenpatroon herinnert aan de ontginning van dit oude veengebied, zo’n 1000 jaar geleden. Dit type verkaveling wordt ook wel boerderijstroken of copen genoemd. Het woord ‘cope’ is in veel plaatsnamen nog terug te vinden, zoals Gerverscop, Heicop, Nieuwkoop.
