QUANDO TUDO ACONTECEU...

1480: Data provável do nascimento de Fernão de Magalhães, talvez em Trás-os-Montes. - 1505: Parte para a Índia na armada de D. Francisco de Almeida. - 1509: Sob o comando de Lopes Sequeira participa na desastrada expedição a Malaca; faz grande amizade com Francisco Serrão. - 1511: Participa, sob o comando de Afonso de Albuquerque, na conquista de Malaca. - 1513: Regressa a Lisboa. - 1514: É ferido em combate, em Azamor (Marrocos); novamente em Lisboa, D. Manuel recusa-lhe aumento de tença. - 1517: Dirige-se a Sevilha para apresentar a Carlos V o seu plano de alcançar as Ilhas das Especiarias por ocidente . - 1519: Inicia a que será a primeira viagem de circum-navegação; alcança a baía da Guanabara. - 1520: Alcança a foz do Rio da Prata; faz invernada na baía de S. DE MALACA ÀS MALUCAS
Nas Molucas, Francisco Serrão recebe uma carta de Fernão de Magalhães. E, entretanto, o que está a acontecer no resto do mundo?

Manhã de 1515, Mar de Sonda. Vindo de Malaca, um junco lança ferro no porto de Ternate, uma das ilhas das especiarias. Também chamadas de Malucas (Molucas), pois incertas são ainda as suas coordenadas. O comandante árabe pede audiência ao soberano Quechil Boleif. É portador de uma carta para Serrão, o Vizir. O da pele clara, o cristão, o português...

Há 3 anos Francisco Serrão partira de Malaca em busca das Malucas. Naufragara nas costas de Ternate. Aspirando regressar, com os seus homens pensara construir ou conquistar um barco. Mas abrandado pelos trópicos acabou por desistir da empreitada. Quechil Boleif nomeou-o Vizir e deu-lhe uma princesa como esposa. E a princesa deu-lhe três filhos, um por ano. Serrão escreveu carta ao seu amigo Magalhães, assentado em Malaca: Vinde ter comigo, Fernão. Encontrei aqui um novo mundo, mais rico e maior do que o de Vasco da Gama...

Em 1509 Magalhães e Serrão haviam feito amizade a bordo de um dos quatro navios da frota comandada por Lopes Sequeira, o qual tinha por missão abrir negociações com o rei de Malaca, praça que dominava todo o comércio do Oriente. O sultão abriu as portas da cidade à marinhagem. Magalhães pressentiu a cilada e avisou Lopes Sequeira. Este reagiu, abriu caminho a tiros de bombarda por entre as barcaças malaias que cercavam a sua frota. Em tempo, pois já começava a matança de portugueses, gritos e correrias pelas ruas da cidade. Magalhães remou para terra e juntou a sua espada à de Serrão, deu-lhe fuga no seu escaler, amizade confirmada. A frota fez-se ao largo, desaire. Dois anos mais tarde o revide: Afonso de Albuquerque conquista Malaca. Entre os guerreiros, Magalhães e Serrão.

Só em 1515 chega a Ternate resposta de Magalhães. Remetida de Lisboa, não de Malaca: Irei a Ternate, mas não pelo caminho usual... Serrão dobra a carta. Saudades muitas. Do amigo, também da língua natal...

Em 1513, em busca de especiarias, diariamente arribam a Lisboa navios mercantes de toda a Europa. Em 1513 o arquitecto Boitaca continua a edificar o Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Em 1513 Fernão de Magalhães regressa à capital do Império. Passou nove anos a batalhar pela Coroa portuguesa em terras do Oriente: Sofala, Cananor, Diu e Malaca. Das muitas riquezas que conquistou, pouco lhe coube: algumas moedas d'ouro e um escravo pardo que mandou baptizar com o nome de Henrique. Fidalgo menor, tem porém direito a frequentar o Paço. Pela sua carreira militar também tem direito a pensão. São-lhe atribuídos 1850 reais mensais. Acha pouco. Por isso parte para Marrocos em nova incursão comandada pelo Duque de Bragança. Em Azamor sofre lançada no joelho que o deixa mutilado. Retorna a Lisboa. Coxeando, em 1514 apresenta-se a Sua Majestade. Exige que a sua tença seja aumentada de 100 reais, apenas mais 100 reais... Há intrigas e El-rei recusa. Magalhães exige depois o comando de uma nau para a Índia. El-rei volta a negar. Não atende a exigências mas apenas a solicitações.

Fernando de Magallanes, también conocido como Hernando de Magallanes (Sabrosa, Región Norte, Portugal, primavera de 1480 – Mactán, Filipinas, 27 de abril de 1521) (en portugués Fernão de Magalhães), fue un navegante portugués.

Al servicio del rey de España, descubrió lo que hoy recibe el nombre de Estrecho de Magallanes, siendo el primer europeo en pasar desde el Océano Atlántico hacia el Océano Pacífico, hasta entonces denominado Mar del Sur. Ferdinand Magellan (Portuguese: Fernão de Magalhães, pronounced [fɨɾˈnɐ̃w̃ ðɨ mɐɡɐˈʎɐ̃ȷ̃s]; Spanish: Fernando de Magallanes, pronounced [feɾ'naNdo ðe maɣa'ʎanes]; c. 1480 – April 27, 1521) was a Portuguese explorer. He was born at Sabrosa, in northern Portugal, but later obtained Spanish nationality in order to serve King Charles I of Spain in search of a westward route to the "Spice Islands" (modern Maluku Islands in Indonesia).

Magellan's expedition of 1519–1522 became the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean (then named "peaceful sea" by Magellan; the passage being made via the Strait of Magellan), and the first to cross the Pacific. It also completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth, although Magellan himself did not complete the entire voyage, being killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. (Magellan had, however, traveled eastwards to the Malay Peninsula on an earlier voyage, so he became one of the first explorers to cross all of the meridians of the globe.) Of the 237 men who set out on five ships, only 18 completed the circumnavigation and managed to return to Spain in 1522, led by the Basque navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who took over command of the expedition after Magellan's death. Seventeen other men arrived later in Spain: twelve men captured by the Portuguese in Cape Verde some weeks earlier and between 1525 and 1527, and five survivors of the Trinidad.

Magellan also gives his name to the Magellanic Penguin, which he was the first European to note, and the Magellanic clouds, now known to be nearby dwarf galaxies.

Early life and travels

Magellan was born around 1480 at Sabrosa, near Vila Real, in the province of Trás-os-Montes, in Portugal. He was the son of Rui de Magalhães (son of Pedro Afonso de Magalhães and wife Quinta de Sousa) and wife Alda de Mesquita and brother of Duarte de Sousa, Diogo de Sousa and Isabel de Magalhães. After the death of his parents during his tenth year he became a page to Queen Leonor at the Portuguese royal court because of his family's heritage.

In March 1505, at the age of 25, Magellan enlisted in the fleet of 22 ships sent to host D. Francisco de Almeida as the first viceroy of Portuguese India. Although his name does not appear in the chronicles, it is known that he remained there eight years, in Goa, Cochin and Quilon. He participated in several battles, including the battle of Cannanore in 1506, where he was wounded. In 1509 he fought in the battle of Diu and later sailed under Diogo Lopes de Sequeira in the first Portuguese embassy to Malacca, with Francisco Serrão, his friend and possibly cousin. In September, after arriving at Malacca, the expedition fell victim to a conspiracy ending in retreat. Magellan had a crucial role, warning Sequeira and saving Francisco Serrão, who had landed. This performance earned him honors and a promotion.

In 1511, under the new governor Afonso de Albuquerque, Magellan and Serrão participated in the conquest of Malacca. After the conquest their ways parted: Magellan was promoted, with a rich plunder, and in the company of a Malay he had indentured and baptised Enrique of Malacca, returned to Portugal in 1512. Serrão departed in the first expedition sent to find the "Spice Islands" in the Moluccas, where he remained, having married a woman from Amboina and becoming a military advisor to the Sultan of Ternate, Bayan Sirrullah. His letters to Magellan would prove decisive, giving information about the spice-producing territories.

After taking a leave without permission, Magellan fell out of favour. Serving in Azemmour he was wounded and got a permanent limp. He was also accused of trading illegally with the Moors. The accusations were proved false, but there were no further offers of employment after May 15, 1514. Later on in 1515, he got an employment offer as a crew member on a Portuguese ship, but rejected. In 1517 after a quarrel with king D. Manuel I, who denied his persistent demands to lead an expedition to reach the spice islands from west, he left for Spain. In Seville he befriended his countryman Diogo Barbosa and soon married his daughter Beatriz Barbosa having had two children: Rodrigo de Magalhães[9] and Carlos de Magalhães, both of whom died at a young age.
