Patience ~ Jessie Rose & C. H. Workman.

Both artists are 'original' Savoyards in as much they created roles in world premières for Gilbert and Sullivan.

# Jessie Rose.

Soprano Jessie Rose [who died in 1928] first appeared with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company was on 7th March 1896 when she created the role of 'Bertha' in the world première of Gilbert and Sullivan's last opera 'The Grand Duke'.

She finally left D'Oyly Carte in 1909 and made her last appearance on the London stages the next year.

Amongst other creations were - On 20th Feb 1897 at the Savoy Theatre she created the role of 'Helena' in the opera 'His Majesty' by Burnand / Lehmann and Mackenzie and on 29th Sept 1909, at the same theatre, created the role of 'Annette' in the opera The Mountaineers by Eden and Somerville.. 

# C H Workman.

C [Charles] H [Herbert] Workman born in Bootle, Lancashire on 5th May 1873 and died on 1st May 1923.

Workman was with D'Oyly Carte from 1894 [debut as Calynx in Utopia Limited] to 1909 and sang numerous roles, leading and otherwise. He created the role of Ben Hashbaz in Gilbert and Sullivan's final opera 'The Grand Duke' in the world première at the Savoy Theatre on 7th March 1896.

He was extremely thought of by critics and audience a like but although asked to return to the company he declined.

In 1923 Workman and his wife were on a Gilbert and Sullivan tour of India and the far east - she died in India in February and he died onboard ship in May. 

# The Dover Street Studios Ltd were active from about 1905 to about 1912 were based at 38 Dover Street, London and were one of the leading firms specialising in theatrical portraiture. They were successors to the Biograph Studios, whose negatives and stock they took over.
