            Il Giorno della Terra, in inglese Earth Day, è il nome usato per indicare due diverse festività: una che si tiene annualmente ogni primavera nell’emisfero nord del pianeta, e un’altra in autunno nell’emisfero sud, dedicate entrambe all’ambiente e alla salvaguardia del pianeta Terra. Le Nazioni Unite celebrano questa festa ogni anno nell’equinozio di primavera, ma è un’osservanza ufficializzarla il 22 aprile di ciascun anno. La festività è riconosciuta da ben 192 nazioni e viene celebrata da quasi mezzo miliardo di persone. L'Earth Day fu celebrato a livello internazionale per la prima volta il 22 aprile 1970 per sottolineare la necessità della conservazione delle risorse naturali della Terra. Nato come movimento universitario, nel tempo, l’Earth Day è divenuto un avvenimento educativo ed informativo. I gruppi ecologisti lo utilizzano come occasione per valutare le problematiche del pianeta: l’inquinamento di aria, acqua e suolo, la distruzione degli ecosistemi, le migliaia di piante e specie animali che scompaiono, e l’esaurimento delle risorse non rinnovabili.
Si insiste in soluzioni che permettano di eliminare gli effetti negativi delle attività dell’uomo; queste soluzioni includono il riciclo dei materiali, la conservazione delle risorse naturali come il petrolio e i gas fossili, il divieto di utilizzare prodotti chimici dannosi, la cessazione della distruzione di habitat fondamentali come i boschi umidi e la protezione delle specie minacciate.
