NYC - UES: Metropolitan Club - a photo on Flickriver

            The Metropolitan Club, designed in Italian Renaissance style, is one of the pre-eminent pieces of late 19th century American architecture and arguably Standford White's most accomplished work in Manhattan. 

The club itself was founded in 1891 by a group of prominent New Yorkers, led by J.P. Morgan, disgruntled over their rejection from the nearby Union Club.  Its white marble exterior with was specifically planned to be as unostentatious as possible and only hints at the extravagant interiors.  The club wished to have a lounge overlooking Central Park to the west, so the entrance is on the side, through a tall, elaborate iron gate and a large curved courtyard demarcated by a two-story wing with a shallow niche at the rear and the four-story main clubhouse on the west.  The east side of the court is balanced by an earlier 6-story row house redesigned for the club's bachelor quarters by Ogden Codman in 1912.  The club has since leased this east wing to the Canadian Club and in 1993 it was leased to the American Academy in Rome.

James Polshek's plans to add a 37-story residential tower atop the east wing and its connecting link were rejected by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1987.

The Metropolitan Club,was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1979.
