NYC - AMNH: Williamette Meteorite - a photo on Flickriver

            The Williamette Meteorite, officially named Williamette, is an iron-nickel meteorite found  in near the city of West Linn in Oregon's Williamette Valley in 1902.  The largest meteorite found in North America, and the sixth largest in  the world, is believed to have landed in what is now Canada or Montana and transported as a glacial erratic during the Missoula Floods at the end of the last Ice Age, around 13,000 years ago.  It was long held sacred by the indigenous peoples there who referred to it as Tomonowos (the visitor from the sky).  The 32,000 pound, 10-foot tall by 6.5-foot wide by 4.25-feet deep meteorite is classified as a type III iron meteorite, being composed of over 91% iron and 7.62% nickel, with traces of cobalt and phosphorus.  In 1905, it was purchased by Mr. William E. Dodge for $26,000 and after being displayed at the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, it was donated to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City where it has since been on display.

The Frederick Phineas & Sandra Priest Rose Center for Earth and Space, located on the north face of the American Museum of Natural History, opened to the public in February 2000.  The $210 million, 335,000-square foot building, designed by  James Polshek and Todd H. Schliemann of Polshek Partnership Architects, replaced the original Hayden Planetarium which was founded in 1933 with a donation by Charles Hayden and opened to the public in 1935.  

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), located at Central Park West and 79th Street, comprises of 28 interconnected buildings housing 45 permanent exhibition halls, in addition to a planetarium and a library, across 2-million square feet.  The collections contain over 33 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and human cultural artifacts.  Founded in 1869, the museum opened in the original Victorian Gothic building designed by J. Wrey Mould in 1877.  A southern expansion, a rusticated Richardsonian Romanesque by J. Cleveland Cady, extends 700 feet along West 77th Street and in 1936, John Russell Pope added the overscaled Beaux Arts entrance on Central Park West.
