The Castle Peeled Away - a photo on Flickriver

            One of Capitol Reef National Park's most iconic formations is the Castle, seen in the center of this photo.  The summit pinnacles of the Castle are composed of the reddish Wingate Sandstone, remnants of massive sand dunes.  The ring of purplish and bright grey strata is the Chinle formation, sediments deposited in lakes and swamps.  Low oxygen concentrations in these sediments  influenced the chemistry of iron minerals, giving them their characteristic coloration.  At the base of the Castle is the deep red Moenkopi formation, the remnants of tidal and nearshore deposits from an ancient sea.

To the right of the Castle the Wingate Sandstone cliffs are capped by the whitish Navajo Sandstone, which were formed by another massive sand dune environment, comparable to today's Sahara Desert.

The road to Torrey is seen snaking through the park, with conifer- and snow-clad Thousand Lake Mountain in the distance.
