Anna's Hummingbird on the Wing - a photo on Flickriver

            I caught this little guy in flight!

I have been taking care of my neighbor's home while they are on a cruise and one of my tasks is to refill her hummingbird feeders. The air around her back porch is filled with these little hummers. I particularity wanted to capture this male with his bright throat feathers. The feeders are hanging under her back patio porch and are mostly in shade. The birds move so fast that my camera's autofocus could not get them in focus. I had to do the focus manually. I don't have a clue as to what kind of hummingbird this is. It is found in Southern California in winter. What I don't understand from watching these little birds is that seem to spend more time fighting each other than drinking from the feeders. My neighbor has 6 feeders, more than enough for all the birds but they still fight each other. 

Nikon D80, 70-300MM VR lens at 300mm. VR on Active. AutoFocus off. ISO 100, 1/200th sec. at f-5.6 with fill flash.

We live in the northwest corner of San Bernardino county in Southern California. There are 1/2 and 3/4 acre lots around us-not really a packed subdivision area.

I think now I remember my neighbor saying 'her' hummers were Anna's.

I spent about an hour on her back porch with these birds and they finally almost ignored me so I could get closer. Hand-holding the camera with the 70-300mm VR lens on manual focus was not easy. Only about 1 out of 5 images were in focus as they move so fast.
