Looking through the Whitney Portal Arch at sunrise. Lone Pine Peak is on the Sierra Crest on the left and Mt. Whitney on the right.

My friend Dave Weber took a photo of me taking a shot of this arch three days after I took this shot..

The alpenglow hit the Sierra peaks and lit them on fire. I like how the detail and colors show up in the granite of the arch. This is an HDR image using digital blending in Photoshop.

If you'd like to photograph this arch visit the Mt Whitney Visitor's Center in Lone Pine and ask for the map handout for the photogenic arches. It is about a thirty minute walk cross country from the Whitney Portal Rd. Do not attempt this hike in the dark until you have done it in daylight. The arch sits atop a ridge that you must scramble up. It is difficult to get this angle without taking an aluminum ladder with you or doing several rock climbing moves as the arch itself is about fifteen feet above where you can stand.
