Going to the Sun

            I froze in sudden fright when a bear--a grizzly--stood and glared at me on a backcountry trail. The animal seemed enormous, with wet, filthy fur and hot breath in the frozen mountain air. I'd heard the many warnings about being in bear country: don't hike alone, make lots of noise, avoid the edges of daylight, always carry a deterrent or defense. I had ignored all the advice. I only had a few weeks in Glacier National Park last summer and I was excited to hike the many high mountain trails leading to glassy turquoise lakes and towering snow-capped summits. So there I was, a mile into my first hike on my first day in the park, standing ten feet from a magnificent, terrifying predator. When the bear mercifully rambled away I hustled in the opposite direction. Back at my campervan (the "Vanabode") I scouted around for a less isolated spot, one within view of the Visitor Center at Logan Pass, and I found this pretty sunset reflection of Reynolds Mountain. Next time I'll bring bear bells, pepper spray and a friend. A slow runner.
