baglio di Scopello (TP) - a photo on Flickriver

             Scopello is a delightful seaside village, part of the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani.

Its curious name most likely owes it to the two stacks or rocks (scopulus in Latin, scopelos in Greek), symbol of the locality.

The village of Scopello is divided into two parts. A central part called the baglio, and an external part where Piazza Nettuno stands out with the drinking trough and a small church in the center.

The word baglio (in Sicilian bagghiu) refers to the internal courtyard of a farm or to a small fort.

The sea is certainly the main attraction of Scopello. And even more, its wonderful tonnara that we meet at the foot of the village, in a cove of extraordinary beauty.

The Tonnara di Scopello is one of the oldest in all of Sicily.

Scopello è un delizioso borgo marinaro, frazione del comune di Castellammare del Golfo, in provincia di Trapani.

Il suo nome curioso lo deve molto probabilmente ai due faraglioni o scogli, (in latino scopulus, in greco scopelos), simbolo della località.

Il borgo di Scopello, è diviso in due parti. Una parte centrale chiamata baglio, e una parte esterna dove spiccano la Piazza Nettuno con al centro ancora l’abbeveratoio e una piccola chiesa.

La parola baglio ( in siciliano bagghiu ) fa riferimento al cortile interno di una fattoria o a un piccolo forte. 

Il mare è sicuramente l’attrattiva principale di Scopello. E ancor più, la sua meravigliosa tonnara che incontriamo ai piedi del borgo, in una cala dalla straordinaria bellezza.

 La Tonnara di Scopello è una delle più antiche di tutta la Sicilia.
