Surratt’s Tavern Museum in Clinton, Maryland

The Mary Surratt House in Clinton (Former Surrattsville), Maryland.  Built in 1852 for the family of John and Mary Surratt.  Restored in 1975 in recognition of the building’s national historic significance relating to the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

Owned and operated by ardently pro-Southern Surratt family, this building was used by confederate agents as a safe house during the Civil War.  Weapons and supplies were secreted here.

The structure was a tavern, hostelry, and post office.  The sign of “Post Office” is still seen at the left-side entrance door.   According to the tour guide, the color was not a painting color, but a color of primer.  After finishing with primer, the painter found out that Mr. John Surratt was not going to pay.  Therefore, the painter did not complete painting job after primer.  

Sentenced to death, Mary Surratt was hanged in 1865, at age 42, for being a co-conspirator in the Abraham Lincoln assassination and became the first woman executed by the U.S. federal government.

It was acquired by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in 1965, restored, and opened to the public as a museum in 1976.
