1946 Desoto Series S-11C Taxicab

Niet zomaar een typisch Amerikaanse ‘yellow cab’, maar een heuse filmvedette. In 1972 figureert deze DeSoto-taxi in Francis Ford Coppola’s meesterwerk ‘The Godfather’.

Vijf jaar later doet de taxi het nog eens dunnetjes over in de film ‘Thieves’ waarin ‘Professor’ Irwin Corey de rol van taxichauffeur vertolkt. Het kleurenschema geel met rood is van de stad San Francisco.

Deze DeSoto is voorzien van het Fluid Drive-systeem, een vloeistofkoppeling die ervoor zorgt dat de schakelovergangen van de versnellingsbak gladgetrokken worden.

Het automerk DeSoto is genoemd naar de Spanjaard Hernando de Soto, die de Mississippi-rivier ontdekte. In 1929 wordt het merk gelanceerd door de Chrysler Corporation. Mede dankzij een enorm marketingoffensief wordt DeSoto een groot succes; in het eerste jaar van productie worden al 80.000 exemplaren verkocht. In de jaren vijftig nemen de verkopen af en in 1960 verdwijnt DeSoto van de markt. Er is ook, net als van de Chrysler, een Airflow-versie van de DeSoto geweest.
