12th March 2017. The River Irwell and the Blackfriars Bridge from Victoria Bridge, Manchester

            The River Irwell was turned into the Manchester Ship Canal in the Nineteenth Century, and the shipping and industrial and domestic waste discharged into the river meant that during the early years of the Twentieth Century, the Irwell was one of the most polluted rivers in the world. For a more graphic account of its history, you can read the Wikipedia article about the river, but suffice it to say on this page, that the river has been reborn in recent decades. It rises near Bacup and flows through Rawtenstall, Bury, Salford and Manchester, to name but a few, before it joins the Mersey at Irlam, whence it continues to the Irish Sea. The river along its length now boasts many water based leisure activities, including boats and swimmers, and on many days you can see young children becoming fully immersed into the waters of the Salford Quays during their sailing lessons. At one time immersion in these waters would have led to poisoning, more readily than drowning. Now fishermen catch many species of fish in the river, and the hope is that the water quality will continue to improve. God Bless the Irwell, and all who sail in her!
