It had been a slow day at El Paradiso wine bar in New Braunfels. The barman was not counting his change. He was counting the corks from the bottles of wine he had served. None of it was plonk. Most of it was from the Texas hill country wineries and vineyards. Some were from Chile and Argentina. One was a rioja from Spain. The bar served two types of customer. One was the native or adopted Texan who knew the local wines. He might have harvested and blended and aged his own product. The Texan wanted to know what wine was trendy or what the competition was producing. The other customer was the tourist from Latin America who was soaking up local color or indulging a nostalgia for the malbecs and torrontes of his native land.

The barman had traveled. He longed for a customer who could engage in a deep appreciation for the varieties and vintages of French and Italian wines. He would not meet that customer in New Braunfels.
