Getting Off Track

            After a stopover in Kansas City overnight at a friends place, my buddy and I had a long, long day ahead of us, which would be to cross Kansas. We were ahead of schedule though, so we were able to make some pitstops and get sidetracked here and there. One such occasion that day was in Salina, KS.

We'd just checked out some things in the area and gotten back on the highway when we heard "Utah 5005" on the radio, and some quick research suggested we should really turn around. So, we did. Lo and behold, one of the handful of elusive MK5000s was leading cars westbound into Salina in tremendous backlighting. After a brief but friendly chat with the conductor, we learned that if nothing else, they would be wying the power, then it was a strong "it depends" for any operations past that, so we stuck around for a bit. Hey, can't say no to a well lit roster shot if nothing else, right?

They did wye the elusive MK50 and its tunnel motor companion, which gave us some time for a few glamour shots of this incredibly strange looking locomotive. The MK5000Cs, as built, were new from Morrison-Knudson, equipped with Caterpillar engine blocks, and a very peculiar design for a cab. The CAT engine didn't prove very successful while on the Utah Railway, and after about a year, the locomotives were rebuilt with EMD 645 blocks and AR11 alternators. Now called MK50-3s, these units are essentially just really weird looking SD50s. It's unclear what the future holds for these funky engines, but despite my disdain for G&W paint, I was very happy to be able to photograph one of these things regardless.

Meanwhile, after wying the power, UTAH5005 and CORP4074 backed up into the UP yard here and tied down. Many of the cars they needed for their outbound train had yet to arrive, and while the train with them was near, it was also clear it would take entirely too long to wait for it - light would be no good by the time they left, and we'd be behind on our schedule. So we bid Salina and our brief snapshot of the KYLE Railroad farewell, and continued onwards... for another eight hours. Talk about a long day. Still, with what we had ahead of us, I knew it would be worth our while. Boy, was it ever.

As an aside, first time ever shooting a train in Kansas. Didn't think I'd be doing that any time soon! Might be a while 'till next time though, but hey, nice to cross off another state.
