Chapelle Notre-Dame de Monserato - a photo on Flickriver

            A l'intérieur de la chapelle Notre-Dame de Monserato, les trois volées d'escaliers recouverts de velours et parés de bois dorés.
En 1811, 424 prêtres Romains qui avaient refusé de prêter serment à l'Empereur Napoléon 1er avaient été exilés en Corse. La population Bastiaise fit à ces ecclésiastiques un accueil chaleureux et les reçut avec les plus grandes marques de respect. En remerciement, à leur retour à Rome, ces prélats obtinrent du Pape Pie VII l'autorisation d'octroyer à la ville de Bastia, le très rare privilège de posséder une Scala Santa à l'image de celle de Rome. La Scala Santa fut donc installée en 1884. C'est un escalier de pénitence pour que les pèlerins puissent méditer la Passion du Christ : les fidèles qui le montent à genoux dans un véritable esprit de contrition sont absouts de tous leurs pêchés.

In 1811, 424 Roman priests who refused to swear allegiance to the Emperor Napoleon 1 had been exiled in Corsica. The Bastiaise population made these churchmen a warm welcome and received them with the greatest marks of respect. In thanks, on their return to Rome, the prelates obtained from Pope Pius VII the authorization granted to the city of Bastia, the very rare privilege of a Scala Santa in the image of that of Rome. La Scala Santa was therefore installed in 1884. It is a penitential stairs to enable pilgrims to meditate on the Passion of Christ: the faithful kneeling rise in the true spirit of contrition are absolved from all their sins.
