Neubrandenburg: Stadtmauer - City Wall

            Neubrandenburg ist mit 69.000 Einwohnern die drittgrößte Stadt des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Wegen der markanten vier mittelalterlichen Stadttore trägt Neubrandenburg den Beinamen „Vier-Tore-Stadt“ bzw. „Stadt der vier Tore“.Am 29. April 1945, kurz vor Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs, nahm die Rote Armee Neubrandenburg ohne Widerstand oder nennenswerte Kampfhandlungen ein. Anschließend brannten Rotarmisten die historische Altstadt zu mehr als 80 Prozent nieder. Deshalb ist die Innenstadt innerhalb der Stadtmauer geprägt von Bauten, die ab den 1950-er Jahren errichtet wurden. 

Die mittelalterliche Wehranlage von Neubrandenburg, erbaut um 1300, ist ein einzigartiges Denkmal von nationaler Bedeutung. Sie besteht aus der fast kreisrunden Wallanlage von 60-70 Metern Breite, der 2300 Meter langen Stadtmauer mit Wiekhäusern, dem Fanelturm, den 5 Ringstraßen und den 4 Toranlagen. Die bis zu 7 Meter hohe, fast vollständig erhaltene Stadtmauer wurde in Feldstein mit Backsteinkrone ausgeführt.
                                                            
With 69,000 inhabitants, Neubrandenburg is the third largest city of the state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Because of its four striking medieval city gates, it is called the "Four Gates City". On 29 April 1945, shortly before the end of WWII, the Soviet Army occupied Neubrandenburg without any resistance. But only hours later, Red Army soldiers burnt down 80 percent of the historic centre, I suppose as an act of revenge for similar or even worse deeds of German troops in their home country. Therefore the centre, inside the city wall, is marked by buildings constructed from the 1950s onwards. 
The medieval fortifications of Neubrandenburg, built about 1300, are a unique monument of national importance, comprising almost circular ramparts with a width of 60 to 70 metres, the almost 2300 metres long city wall with its "Wiek Houses", the "Fangelturm" tower, the 5 ring roads and the 4 gate complexes. Until the wall was breached in 1864 at the Railway Gate, these gates provided the only access to the town. The city wall, up to 7 m high and nearly completely preserved in intact state, was built from boulders and crowned with bricks.
