Berlin: Kleiner Kohlweißling (Pieris rapae) im Bauerngarten der Liebermann-Villa - Small white on a flower in the cottage garden in front of the Liebermann Villa

            Der Maler Max Liebermann (1847–1935) war Mitbegründer und Vorsitzender der Berliner Secession und Präsident der Preußischen Akademie der Künste (1920–1933). Er wurde von den Nationalsozialisten von seinem Amt abgelöst und verfemt. 
Um der Hektik der Großstadt Berlin entfliehen zu können, erwarb Max Liebermann im Jahr 1909 ein etwa 7260 m² großes, schmales Wassergrundstück am Wannsee und ließ sich dort  von dem Architekten Paul Otto Baumgarten eine Sommervilla bauen. Den großen, zum See hin gestreckten Garten ließ er von dem späteren Stadtgartendirektor von Berlin, Albert Brodersen, anlegen und sich dabei von dem auch als „Gartenreformer“ bekannten Alfred Lichtwark, dem damaligen Direktor der Hamburger Kunsthalle, beraten. Im Jahr 1940, fünf Jahre nach Liebermanns Tod, wurde seine Witwe Martha von den Nationalsozialisten gezwungen, die Villa unter Verkehrswert an die Reichspost zu verkaufen. Der lächerlich niedrige Verkaufspreis wurde ihr nie ausbezahlt. Martha Liebermann selbst wählte 1943 den Freitod, um nicht in das KZ Theresienstadt deportiert zu werden. Ab 1944 diente die Villa dann als Lazarett. Auch nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Villa weiterhin bis 1969 als Krankenhaus genutzt. Die Erben in den USA (Tochter Käthe Riezler) erhielten die Villa nach dem Krieg zurück. Das Land Berlin erwarb 1958 das Anwesen und verpachtete es 1972 an einen Tauchverein.  Erst die langjährigen Bemühungen der 1995 gegründeten Max-Liebermann-Gesellschaft e. V. führten dazu, dass die Villa am 30. April 2006 als Museum Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee eröffnet wurde. Die rund drei Millionen Euro teure Sanierung wurde von der Max-Liebermann-Gesellschaft und privaten Spenden finanziert. Aufgrund der zahlreichen Gemälde von Liebermanns Hand, die den Garten festhielten, konnten die Gartenanlagen wieder originalgetreu rekonstruiert werden.

The painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935) was co-founder and chairman of the Berlin Secession and President of the Prussian Academy of Arts (1920-1933). He was expulsed from his office by the nazis and ostracized. In 1909, Max Liebermann acquired a narrow 7260 m² waterfront property at Wannsee in order to escape the hectic pace of the big city of Berlin and had a summer villa built there by the architect Paul Otto Baumgarten. He commissioned the large garden, which stretched out towards the lake, to be planned by the later Municipal Gardens Director of Berlin, Albert Brodersen, and consulted Alfred Lichtwark, then director of the Hamburg Kunsthalle (Art Museum) and also known as "garden reformer". In 1940, five years after Liebermann's death, his widow Martha was forced by the nazis to sell the villa to the Reichspost at market value. The ridiculously low selling price was never paid to her. Martha Liebermann herself chose suicide in 1943 in order not to be deported to the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. From 1944 onwards the villa served as a military hospital. Even after the Second World War, the villa continued to be used as a hospital until 1969. After the war, the villa was restituted to the heirs in the USA (daughter Käthe Riezler). The City of Berlin acquired the property in 1958 and leased it to a diving club in 1972.  Thanks to the long-standing efforts of the Max Liebermann Society, founded in 1995, the villa was reopened as a Museum on April 30, 2006. The renovation, which cost around three million euros, was financed by the Max Liebermann Society and private donations. Due to the numerous paintings of Liebermann showing the garden, it could be reconstructed true to the original.
