«Terborch was endowed with a rare artistic taste and a gift of refined colorism. His small paintings - genre scenes, portraits - are distinguished by high quality of painting performance. Terborch was especially sensitive to the texture, surface of objects and things, masterfully reproducing the beauty of shiny satin, silk, transparency of patterned lace, radiance of precious metals. In the portrait genre, he proved to be quite an original master, creating a type of "replaced" ceremonial portrait, without scenery and pompousness.

In the museum portrait, an unknown young woman is depicted in a festive outfit with a fan and gloves in her hands. Having achieved sufficient similarity to nature, the artist focused all his attention on finding exquisite colorful combinations of gray, white and black colors. Neutral olive gray background, depth of space distinguish the female figure, giving it a shade of significance. This painting can undoubtedly be called a wonderful example of Gerard Terborch's pictorial manner.»
