Ruins of the Dawson Hotel, Mid North South Australia

            Dawson in the Hundred of Coglin, proclaimed 31 October 1878, was named after Patrick Boyce Coglin MP. 
The town of Dawson, in the Mid North region of South Australia was proclaimed 19 May 1881 – in earlier days it was often referred to as Coglin. 
After a survey as many as 360 allotments were laid out. The first were sold in Adelaide at auction on 9 June 1881. 
Like many other towns Dawson actually came into being as a result of the wheat drive beyond Goyder’s Line and the expansion of railways. Unfortunately its farmers, investors and residents missed out on both. After initial good yields the seasons changed and crops were small. The railway line, which settlers had hoped and fought for to go through their town, went through Peterborough and Oodla Wirra instead. Dawson residents had to travel by horse or coach to Oodla Wirra to catch a train. 

Churches were built and storekeepers set up: a mail service developed and an institute was formed. Sport teams were formed, and a hotel developed a thriving business. By 1887 the town numbered over 100 residents and in 1888 their first race meeting was held. After the discovery of gold in 1894 miners boosted the population.
