Kingscote Town Hall/Kangaroo Island Council Chambers, South Australia

            The District Council was first proclaimed on 5th January 1888 at a meeting at the Queenscliffe Hotel. The Council Chambers were built in 1898. In 1912 a large hall was built behind the original building (later named Kingscote Community Hall) 

The hall was a destination once a year for families from surrounding farms for the Methodist Strawberry fete. The strawberries came from Adelaide on the boat ‘Karatta’.

In the 1930s the Town Crier, Mr Cook would ring a bell and sing out in a loud voice announcements of council elections, dances and other important events. 

This two storey building incorporating two shopfronts, was constructed in 1955, the work of Adelaide architect Walter D Cowell and contractors William M Essery and Sons Pty Ltd. The Hall was opened by the Honourable Thomas Playford MP, Premier of South Australia on 20 December 1955. 
Additions incorporated the earlier hall of 1912.

The current hall was a result of a rebuild and was developed in 2006.
