Kingscote interior of the Uniting Church built as Methodist in 1907, Kangaroo Island South Australia

            The original church was erected at Cygnet River in 1885. Eleven years later in 1896 the church was relocated to Kingscote to cater for the growing population.
The church was closed shortly after and did not reopen until 1907 when a new stone building was erected. 

The curate was Reverend Ray Caust (26 years old) who used to ride his bike between the church in Penneshaw and Kingscote, visiting parishioners along the way. He would often have to carry his bike through mud and water up to his knees.

Beneath the foundation lies a copy of the ‘Australian Christian Commonwealth’, and the first issue of the ‘Kangaroo Island Courier’.

FIRST VICE-REGAL VISIT FOR 24 YEARS
The Centenary celebrations at Kingscote marked the first official visit of a Governor of the State to Kangaroo Island for 24 years. His Excellency the Governor (Sir Winston Dugan) and Lady Dugan, accompanied by Commander Phillips ADC, reached Kingscote by the ‘Moonta’. They were met by the Commissioner of Public Works (Mr Hudd) and Mrs Hudd, the chairman of the District Council (Mr Kasehagen) and Mrs Kasehagen, the chairman of the Centenary committee (Mr Mervyn Smith) and Mrs Smith, the president of the Kingscote Agricultural and Horticultural Society (Mr R Wheaton) and Mrs Wheaton, and the president of the Kingscote Racing Club (Mr O Turner) and Mrs Turner. There was a large crowd on the jetty when the 'Moonta' berthed. 

The Governor, replying to an official welcome extended by Mr Kasehagen, said that Lady Dugan and he were delighted to have the opportunity of visiting Kangaroo Island, because of its importance in the historical records of South Australia. 

'We are looking forward with pleasure to the few days we shall spend on the Island' he added, 'and hope to meet many of the people who are descendants of the early settlers’. 

Rifle shooting matches were held during the day, and the prizes were presented by Mr Hudd at the race club ball held in the evening. 
Local residents recently enacted a replica of the landing of the first settlers on July 27, 1936, and a film of the event was screened before a number of residents and visitors last week. 

Visit To Emu Bay 
On Sunday the Governor motored to Emu Bay, and in the afternoon laid the foundation stone of the Methodist manse. The president of the Methodist Conference (Rev A B Lloyd) addressed the gathering. His Excellency said that he trusted that the building to be erected would prove worthy of the historical church with which it was to be associated. 

A vote of thanks to the Governor was moved by Mr A T Wreford, and seconded by the treasurer of the church (Mr Wheaton). [Ref: Chronicle 12-11-1936]
