Manoora Railway Station Waiting Room, Mid North South Australia

            The State Heritage listed Manoora Railway Station, Mid North South Australia. Opened early 1870, closed after being on the Peterborough railway line serving Burra.

Manoora is an umbrella name incorporating the tiny settlements of Burton and Chingford (Chingkford).

The township has a large Institute opened in 1880 with attached Soldiers’ Memorial Supper Rooms.

Beside the institute is a commemorative plaque celebrating HMAS Manoora, an armed merchant cruiser named for a large sheep station in South Australia. 

By the disused railway station is a large seed works - established in 1974, Manoora Seeds is a leader in quality seed services and has been servicing the local area for the past 40 plus years.
Manoora Seeds is one of the largest single exporters of vetch from Australia.

HMAS Manoora (F48) 1939–1945 an Armed Merchant Cruiser – Landing Ship Infantry - Burma, New Guinea, Phillipines, Borneo. 

The vessel was involved in operations at Singapore, Calcutta, Hollandia, Morotai, China Sea, Leyte Island, Luzon Island, Tarakan, Labaun, Balikpapan.

She was built in Scotland in 1935 for the Cairns to Fremantle coastal run. Her name was derived from the name of a large sheep station in South Australia, owned by Sir Walter Duncan a Director of the Adelaide Steamship Company. 

Following the outbreak of World War Two she was requisitioned by the Royal Australian Navy on 11 October 1939 and outfitted in Sydney for service as an Armed Merchant Cruiser. After cessation of hostilities she repatriated troops and refugees until 1947. She was decommissioned 9 December 1947 and returned to the Adelaide Steamship Company.
