The Rev Ernst Homann, whose death in South Australia, is announced, was the oldest pastor of the Lutheran Synod in Australia. He was born in Ostrode, Germany, on December 1, 1838, and was trained for the ministry in Hermannsburg, where so many of the older Lutheran clergy of Australia received their education. He was ordained in 1866, and emigrated to Australia. Until the year 1874 he laboured among the aborigines at Cooper's Creek and Killalpanninna, and endured many hardships and privations. Having resigned his charge, he arranged to go to America. This p!an, however, was altered by his acceptance of a call to the pastorate of the Flinders Street Lutheran Church in Adelaide. In 1887 he was transferred to the parish of Carlsruhe, in Waterloo, South Australia. Until the date of his retirement from active service in the ministry, which took place on April 1, 1903, he was a most energetic worker.
