            The Darling Building was built in 1916 for the South Australian firm of John Darling and Son.
Neither John Darling or his son lived to see it completed. 
John Darling and his eldest son John arrived in South Australian in 1855. John jnr in 1866 joined his father's wheat merchant and flour milling company that became the larges in Australasia, with branches in Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and London. The building was owned by John Darling and Son Proprietary Ltd until 1958.
It is now home of William Burton Leopardi Architects.

E H McMichael was the architect of the Darling Building - it was one of the first buildings to use reinforced concrete.

*Death of Mr Darling 
News of the death of Mr John Darling will be received with widespread regret, for the deceased gentleman had been a prominent figure in business circles for many years, whilst his genial disposition had secured him hosts of friends.

On Friday March 27, Mr Darling was visiting Melbourne to attend the board 
meeting of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. He had a consultation with the secretary of the company (Mr F M Dickenson) at a quarter past 2 on Friday afternoon, and suddenly became ill. Dr O'Hara was communicated with, and Mr Darling was taken to Dr O'Hara's private hospital in a taxi-cab. No serious complications were anticipated. His daughter-in-law (Mrs Harold Darling) saw him during the evening and advised him to try to sleep, as he felt tired. He turned over for tbe purpose of going to sleep, and almost immediately expired, at about 11 pm, the cause of death being heart failure. 
All the directors of the company were present at the Spencer Street station on Saturday when the body was placed on the train for Adelaide. Mr H C E Muecke represented the directors at the funeral at Adelaide on Monday. 

Although born in Edinburgh in 1852, Mr Darling was virtually an Australian, for he was only four years of age when his parents came to Adelaide. He was educated at Pulteney Street school, and at the age of 14 he entered the office of his father, the late John Darling, sen, who was a member of the South Australian Parliament for 25 years. Mr John Darling, jun, joined the firm in 1872, and the partnership, since known as Messrs John Darling and Son, grew to be the largest grain export establishment in Australasia, with branches in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, and Western Australia. The house purchased the Eclipse Flour Mills at Port Adelaide, and the goodwill of Messrs J Dunn and Co in 1900.

Mr Darling was connected with the Broken Hill Proprietary Co Ltd as a director for the past 22 years, and he was chairman for the past seven years. He was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1896 to 1905. During the Jenkins and Butler Ministries he was the power behind the throne. He refused repeated requests to stand again for Parliament, chiefly on the ground of ill health.

Mr Darling leaves a widow, who was the eldest daughter of the late Alexander Dowie, of Adelaide, and a family of three sons and three daughters. One of his brothers is Mr Joe Darling, captain of Australian Elevens.
