Arizona - Grand Canyon: Powell Memorial - Commemorative plaque for Major John Wesley Powell. The Stone Memorial that bears the plaque was erected in 1915, and the observation point was named "Powell Point"

            The plaque on the memorial also lists the names of the members of his two expeditions.
The United States Congress erected this monument to commemorate the first exploratory expedition through the Grand Canyon in 1869 by Major John Wesley Powell. Powell had first descended the Colorado in rowboats on August 5, 1869, with his party consisting of John C. Sumner, Walter H. Powell, G. Y. Bradley, William R. Hawkins, and Andrew Hall, and had crossed the canyon on August 17 at the point directly below the monument. 
  
On September 1, 1872, Powell's second expedition through the Grand Canyon reached this spot on the Colorado River below this point.
