Tough Pill to Swallow - a photo on Flickriver

While I do wonder what will become of the former pharmacy counter spaces in all the affected Fred’s stores, I have to assume that figuring out how to reclaim that square footage isn’t the top thing on Fred’s corporate’s mind right now. As a matter of fact, like I said earlier, the entire company seems to be in flux right now, not just as a result of this pharmacy sale deal but more pertinently due to the uncertainty surrounding the location of the company’s headquarters. Fred’s continues to deny that it’s planning a move to Texas, but there are many signs saying otherwise, and just today it was reported that their current digs in Memphis are now on the market. (Best comment I’ve seen so far related to that: “Fred, you’re giving away the headquarters!”, a reference to Fred’s commercials from back in the day – which I’ve never seen, but regardless know of from one source or another – in which it would be proclaimed, “Fred, you’re giving away the store!”) While it will certainly be sad to see Fred’s depart Memphis – they’ve been in the area since their founding in Coldwater, MS, in 1947 – hopefully, whatever happens they’ll at least manage to stay in business…

If you have a Fred’s store near you and are concerned whether or not its pharmacy was included in the Walgreens deal, I’d suggest that you check out the Fred's store locator. No comprehensive list of the affected locations was ever publicly released, but if you sort that page on “Store Hours M-F,” all of the stores sold to Walgreens appear at the bottom of the page. (I can’t guarantee that that shortcut will continue to work that way in the future, but at least for the near-term that’s a nice way to alert their customers – and us! – as to what’s going on!) I’ve been keeping track of those stores as they appear (the closures are happening in waves, it seems) in an Excel file; as of today, 83 of the 179 pharmacies have closed.
