In the Rain and Gloom - a photo on Flickriver

            These plants are sometimes callled 'blue ginger' and resemble in habit true gingers. Their correct botanic name is Dichorisandra thyrsiflora) and are related to spiderworts and the genus Tradescantia. They are popular sub-tropical garden plants and in my garden prefer the gloomy understorey of larger shrubs and trees. In this situation their lustrous leaves are often marked by leaf litter and minor damage from falling branches, but the plants provide a striking burst of colour in the shaded areas of the garden.
