SR71A Blackbird & Intrepid - a photo on Flickriver

            This was the fastest natural airflow plane in the history of the world, capable of 85,000 feet in altitude and more than three times the speed of sound.  Only rockets or rocket-assisted craft can exceed the Blackbird's Mach 3.2.  Maybe the largest two-person craft as well.  I took this with my old Minolta SRT101.   The base let me test-fly their flight simulator.  (I didn't crash either "plane," until I did!!!!)

I had just bought my last brand new car,  that emerald green 1993 Dodge Intrepid and by coincidence here was a trip to meet a friend at the Castle Air Museum near the town of Atwater.  Arriving early just north of the 99,  I saw a chance to park next to this aviation icon.    I used film (and an old Canon SRT-101) in those days and my friend Steve was kind enough to scan the negative,  which I have kept safe for almost 27 years.  I kept it with a 14- by 22-inch enlarged print which I haven't gotten around to framing yet.   

It wasn't my last Intrepid.  My wife and I leased a 2000 Intrepid which she kept when we split.  And in 2003 I bought a used 1995 Intrepid which I still have here in Michigan,  where I and all my warm, thick clothing dwell.
