" West from The Sallygap " - a photo on Flickriver

The view is westward towards Mullaghcleevaun, Moanbane and Carrigshouk mountains and the Coronation plantation of Scots pines from 1831. { See Album for more pics and History }
The name "Sally" refers to Willow species, which is called "Salix" in Latin so they are generally called Sallys here. Of course, the most famous reference to them comes from Yeat`s poem "The Sally Gardens" which would be an area "down by the river" where they would have been grown as "Withys" for basketmaking. fencing or for holding down straw on thatched roofs. Somerset in England is now the main area for commercially grown willow.
