A view at dusk of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland taken from the beach at Clogherhead,County Louth, in the Irish Republic. Such a beautiful and magical mountain range and they do indeed sweep down to the sea.
Percy French wrote a lot of songs. Mostly funny, whimsical ones and then suddenly he wrote this amazing one. Its really about a young farmer who lives in the Mournes but because of hard times he has to go to London to work on construction sites.
The song is based on a letter he writes home to his sweetheart who is waiting for him to return. Experts believe that French got his hands on one of the letters as apparently people gave him lots of bits of notes with ideas on them.
I love the innocence and the gentleness of it and it affects me every time I hear it as I think its truly gorgeous and the most beautiful Irish song ever written. I do hope he got back to his Mary.
