Looks like an Austin kind of day - searing hot colors - searing hot temps

            Botanical notes: Trapaeolum majus, commonly known as nasturtium.  Commonly grown as an annual, hardy to all zones, with summer blooming period longest in Zones 9-11.  Normally grown in full sun, but in the hottest regions they grow best with some protection from the sun. 

Nasturtium are usually grown for their beautiful, bright blooms, which range in color from creamy near white through deepest mahogany red.  Most are bright shades of red, orange and gold.  Some, like the Empress of India, are single color (bright red) but many are mixed colors.  The foliage can be solid color green -- from light green to blue green -- or variegated green and cream (as in the Alaska series). 

There are several varieties of nasturtiums:  bushy types, trailing types and climbers.  While commonly grown for their bright blooms, the foliage, especially the variegated forms, can be attractive.  If given highly enriched soil, the foliage will prosper and there will be fewer blooms so gardeners seeking just the bright colors might want to subject the plants to a little deprivation to encourage blooming.

All parts of the nasturtium are edible!  The beautiful blossoms make lovely garnishes or additions to the tops of salads or other dishes.  The leaves have a sharp taste, reminiscent of  watercress or arugula -- wonderful in green salads.  The seeds can be pickled and served like capers.
