Peaceable Kingdom

              Who left this longhorn beetle trussed up
    in a spider's noose
as a mission statement beside the back door

is gone, but it's a cinch a recluse who works
    at night might knot.  I saw the shadow
of Jim Crow hanging lightly, to scale, and saw

again yesterday's wounded damsel struggle
    as if winged in some flutterby violence.
And who's to say the catbird mewling at sleep's

door isn't dying, doesn't have a clutch held
    hostage by an Angoran cousin?  Who's not
to say bob bobwhite could be a conniving

pigeon for the right glittery bauble: perhaps
     his forest venue is not all it's cracked up
to be; he's been stoned, ransacked, flown

backward to remember his brief future
     once more.  I saw a coven of ladybugs
eviscerate a weevil.  It bled tobacco juice.

This fickle wind breezing past might marry
     the sycamore, for the moment, but slip
breathlessly away for some quivering, long limbed

aspen. And Peter Rabbit has his own cottontail
     trail of tears to tell, fraught with homicides.
Better to salvage a buttercup or two against the cold,

to wrap the shirred, pique' petals snug and shut
    out the nightly groanings.  Better to emulate
the mud puppy, barking with abandon in his hibernal

dreams inside the riverbed's soft muck, under 
     his shadows, his thick blanket of murk.
Best to say those sirens are not howling for you.
