back to the beach

            I seek your voice, 
your hair, your mouth.
silent and starving, 
I prowl the beach, 
sands warm embers
burning my feet 
but nothing nourishes me
not bread nor the ripe
peaches you left
in a blue bowl 
and all day I hunt
for your brown legs
and slim hips amidst
the tidepools, umbrellas,
along the boardwalk, 
your sun bronzed skin
color of almonds
and when I find you
my words will rain down
over you and I will taste
the salt of your lips
but now I pace about, 
sniffing twilight, hunting
for you, your heart beating 
like a lantern somewhere
in the darkness
the beast in my chest
painting like a puma,
delirious and half-insane
