Loch Ness from the site that used to be used for "Rock Ness," near Dores beach, Inverness-shire, Scotland.

Commentary.

What immense, attritional earth movements
produced this fissure, this strike-slip fault?
Over three hundred and fifty miles long.
Several thousand feet deep.
Two immense plates slid together,
Grampians to the south,
North-West Highlands on the north shore.
When the last ice-age faded, meltwater
surged to fill this immense chasm.
From the peak of “the Ben” to the depths of Loch Ness,
over a mile in vertical extremes.
Here the world-famous, Loch Ness, is seen in all its magnificence.
Twenty-thee miles long.
Up to a mile and a half wide.
Nearly a thousand foot deep.
More water than all the lakes
of England and Wales, combined.
Almost two cubic miles of H20.
In all weathers, and maybe, particularly,
under moody mists and clouds,
its scale and mystery
grabs the attention of millions.
