            Enrico Rava studeert eerst piano dan trombone om zich in 1956 als autodidact het trompetspel eigen te maken onder invloed van Miles Davis. Zijn carrière komt pas echt van de grond als hij vanaf 1962 met Gato Barbieri, Don Cherry, Mal Waldron en Steve Lacy musiceert. In 2004 wordt hij tot 'Jazzmusicus van het Jaar' uitgeroepen door de Franse Académie du Jazz. Op de brug der zuchten blaast Enrico Rava de melancholie de eeuwigheid in. Net als Soren Kierkegaard legt Rava's melancholie het menszijn bloot. Zij is het grondthema van zijn muzikaal oeuvre. Daarvoor tovert Rava een koele wind uit zijn trompet, van een onwerkelijke schoonheid met de gloed van de aurora borealis. Hij creëert een amalgaam van diepgewortelde lyriek, doorspekt met experimenten van het goede soort uit de vrij geïmproviseerde muziek en een haast genetisch bepaalde mediterrane melodica. Bij Rava tellen de noten die hij nìet speelt eveneens hard mee. Rava's nieuwe kwintet brengt muziek met enerzijds een dromerig karakter maar anderzijds harmonisch spannend en ritmisch uitdagend. Opvallend is de warme en pittige synergie tussen Rava's trompet en Petrella's trombone, de grote vrijheid voor de ritmesectie en veel ruimte in het groepsgeluid. "Ik hou van hedendaagse muziek die vorm, tempo, harmonie, melodie heeft maar ik wil ook in alle vrijheid regels kunnen breken als ik er zin in heb. Indien niet, dan respecteer ik de regels", dixit Rava.
