Around 1130, there was already a first castle on the site of the current one.  The castle developed into the headquarters of the Merkem seigniory.
In 1381, the castle was rebuilt after it had been destroyed by a fire.  In 1566, it was completely destroyed again during the religious disputes.

The seigniory and the castle came into the hands of the Van Outryve family in 1764.  The daughter of this new owner married knight Patrice de Coninck.  After his death, in 1815, the castle came into the hands of the de Coninck family.

At the end of October 1914, the German troops set up an observation post in the castle's garden.  As a result, the garden and the castle were the target of shelling, so that by the end of the First World War everything was completely destroyed.

In 1923, the reconstruction of the current castle started, and the park was also restored.

Rond 1130 was er al een eerste kasteel op de plaats van het huidige kasteel.  Het kasteel groeide uit tot de hoofdzetel van de heerlijkheid Merkem.
In 1381 werd het kasteel heropgebouwd nadat het door een brand werd verwoest.  Tijdens de godsdiensttwisten werd het in 1566 terug volledig verwoest.

De heerlijkheid en het kasteel komen in 1764 in handen van de familie Van Outryve.  De dochter van deze nieuwe eigenaar huwt met ridder Patrice de Coninck.  Na zijn dood, in 1815, komt het kasteel in handen van de familie de Coninck.

Eind oktober 1914 plaatsen de Duitse troepen een observatiepost in de tuin van het kasteel.  De tuin en het kasteel worden hierdoor mikpunt van beschietingen, zodat tegen het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog alles volledig verwoest is.

In 1923 wordt gestart met de heropbouw van het huidige kasteel, en werd het park eveneens gerestaureerd.
