            Since one of the three Peregrine Falcon juveniles had been rescued and then released on Tuesday, we have been wanting to confirm that all five birds were still alive and well in the area.   To this end we spent 3 hours this morning trying to find and record all five birds at the same time to prove that the rescue bird had returned to the family.  We had our friend with us so with 3 sets of eyes we were confident of having a chance of finding them.  We even conscripted another bird photographer who was there this morning to help for a while.

It proved very difficult and for most of the time we had no advance over two juveniles and the mother which was the same count we had on the morning of the release.  For a very brief period, two of the observers felt that there may have been three juveniles in the air but no photograph could be taken and it was inconclusive.  Eventually the father returned to the cliff and for some time we had definite confirmation of two adults and two juveniles.  We were just about to give up and conclude at this point that the rescue bird hadn’t made it.

At the point of packing up, one final check revealed a third juvenile in view having emerged from a crevice in the cliff.  With still three sets of eyes and three cameras, we quickly checked that all 5 birds were in position and none had moved.  Each bird was on it’s own, and they were spread over a good length of the cliff.  The good news was that they didn’t move for several minutes, so we were able to get a photo of each bird in it’s location.

The photographs are of extremely poor quality.  Anyone who knows the site will realise the extreme distance involved and by this time the heat was making atmospheric distortion a huge problem.  It is at least enough to identify the birds.  The juveniles are numbered 1 to 3 simply because of their position on the cliff left to right.  If we were to guess which one was the rescue bird, number 1 gets the nod.  It is also interesting that this bird was always standing with it’s wings drooped.  However, it definitely could fly.
