An Army reservist on short-term army service(?) Württemberg/ Hessen(?), Germany 1937

            Under the statutes of the Versailles treaty, the Weimar Republic had no conscription and no reserve system. These were only re-introduced in 1935.

Due to this, for over a period of more than 1 1/2 decades, no young men had been drafted for compulsory military service and no former servicemen had been called up for military excercises.

In order to partially make up for the resulting lack of trained reservists, many younger men of the so-called weiße Jahrgänge ["white age groups"] were called up for eight weeks of abbreviated military training from 1935 to 1937/1938. Likewise, older reservists of the Landwehr were called up for military exercises and even border security duties from 1936 to 1939 (which fits with the photograph's 1937 date).

Both groups were usually kitted out with obsolete dark green or dark blue State Police uniforms. These were worn with army breast eagles and various combinations of other insignia (with or without collar Litzen, with or without shoulder boards etc.)
