Junger Kuckuck mit ungewöhnlicher Leihmutter

            Der Kuckuck (Cuculus canorus) gehört zur Ordnung der Kuckucksvögel (Cuculiformes) und zur Familie der Kuckucke (Cuculidae). Er kommt in Nordafrika und in Eurasien von Portugal und Irland nach Osten bis Japan und Kamtschatka vor. Er ist etwa taubengroß, sein Gefieder ist größtenteils grau. Die Art ist außer durch den charakteristischen „gu-kuh“-Ruf durch ihren Brutparasitismus allgemein bekannt. Der Kuckuck legt seine Eier einzeln in Nester kleinerer Singvögel und betreibt selbst keine Brutpflege. Die Kuckuckweibchen bevorzugen einzelne Wirtvogelarten und legen Eier, die denen dieser Arten weitgehend entsprechen. Das wenige Stunden alte Kuckucksjunge entfernt die Eier und Jungvögel der Wirtseltern und wächst allein im Nest heran.
Der Kuckuck ist Namensgeber für andere Lebewesen, die ebenfalls Brutparasitismus betreiben, wie etwa die Kuckuckshummeln oder die Kuckucksente. Beim Menschen werden außerehelich gezeugte Kinder umgangssprachlich manchmal Kuckuckskinder genannt. Ebenso findet der Kuckuck auch in Redewendungen und Musik Erwähnung. In der Schweiz war er Vogel des Jahres 2001 und in Deutschland und Österreich Vogel des Jahres 2008.
