Little Blue Carpenter Bee (Blauwe ertsbij) Ceratina cyanea Kirby, 1802

            The blue ore bee is a small metallic blue bijûe (6-7 mm) with a white spot on the head shield, on the shoulder humps and at the base of the shins.  The species is found locally in the stems in sunny, dry areas.  She creates several nest cells in a stem, separated by walls of pieces of marrow and fibers.  It is a polylectic species.  The life cycle is similar to that of the related carpenter bees (Xylocopa).  Both sexes overwinter as an image, often with more specimens in one stem at a time.  From mid-April these animals fledge and mate.  The new generation will appear in August, depending on the weather conditions, in September-October.

De blauwe ertsbij is een klein metaalblauw bijûe (6-7 mm) met een witte vlek op het kopschild, op de schouderbulten en aan de basis van de schenen. De soort wordt lokaal talrijk aangetroffen in het stengels op zonnige, droge terreinen. Ze legt in een stengel verschillende nestcellen aan, gescheiden door wandjes van stukjes merg en vezels. Het is een polylectische soort. De levenscyclus komt overèen met die van de verwante houtbijen (Xylocopa). Beide sexen overwinteren als imago, vaak met meer exemplaren tegelijk in één stengel. Vanaf half april vliegen deze dieren uit en paren. Vanaf augustus verschijnt de nieuwe generatie die al naar gelang de weersomstandigheden in september-oktober haar winterkwartier opzoekt.
